BOREHAM Wood were punished late on as they went down to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Eastleigh on Tuesday night.

The home side struck with 11 minutes to spare as Mark Yeates curled home the only goal of the game to take the points in the National League clash.

Luke Garrard made three changes to his starting line-up with Connor Smith, Gozie Ugwu and Manny Parry coming in for Femi Ilesanmi, Justin Shaibu and the suspended Tom Champion.

The changes did little to disrupt Wood early in the game as they went close through Ricky Shakes after he was picked out by a fine pass from Matt Ricketts.

The hosts soon came into the game and Alex Wynter really should have done better after escaping the attention of his marker at a corner, but could only glance a header wide.

Both sides continued to exchange chances in the first-half and the end to end nature of the game carried on after the half-time interval.

It would be Eastleigh who eventually struck the decisive blow as the game approached its close.

Yeates picked the ball up on the left and cut inside before finding the far corner of the Wood goal with a well-placed right foot strike.

The mid-week defeat was made all the harder to take for Wood as it came on the back of a 3-1 loss to Salford City on Saturday.

Wood made a nightmare start to the game when Tom Walker put the home side ahead with just three minutes on the clock and Mark Shelton added a second soon after.

The game was all but settled by Rory Gaffney’s 52nd minute effort before Wood grabbed a goal of their own through Josh Umerah.

The Wood will try to recover from the double disappointment when they take on Harrogate Town at home on Saturday.
