Former Woodford Golf Club captain John Peters has been elected into the most important golfing position in Essex and north-east London.

Leytonstone-born Peters will be President of the Essex Golf Union after being chosen for the post at an annual meeting held at Upminster Golf Club.

The new President of the Essex Golf Union, in his most prestigious role yet, has been given two years in the job and faces the difficult task of persuading more people to play as members rather than on shorter-term pay-and-play options readily available to the public.

Peters had been an Essex Golf Union director for 17 years prior to his nomination and the role has been earned through his many golfing endeavours throughout the years.

Previously, Peters had been Woodford’s club president from 2006 to 2009 and has also served as handicap secretary and captain.

In matters on the course, Anthony Weaver took the seniors’ February medal at Woodford Golf Club last week.

The golf was played in damp conditions and Weaver’s total of 32 stableford points edged him just above Tom Steed’s total of 31.

Hugh Williams performed best over the first nine holes with a prize-winning score of 19 points, while John Smith-Pryor won the nearest the pin prize on the short par-three ninth.
