A former football player has died aged 44.

The football world has shown its respects after the St Albans City player, Domnic Gentle, who was born in Enfield, died from aggressive brain tumour on Friday.

Dominic spent the 1998-99 season with the Saints, following in the footsteps of his younger brother Justin who first played for the City in February 1997.

An electrician, Dominic joined St Albans City from Purfleet.

A former schoolboy with Watford, he left Vicarage Road to complete an apprenticeship in shop-fitting.

He resumed his playing career with Cockfosters and from there he went to Boreham Wood.

The Enfield-born player also had spells at Stevenage, Heybridge Swifts, Hendon, Purfleet, Enfield, Grays Athletic, Billericay Town, Bishop’s Stortford, Slough Town, and Waltham Abbey.

Writing on behalf of the Saints, David Tavener said: "All at St Albans City send our condolences to Justin and all family and friends of Dominic at this sad time."

Chris Daines from Heybridge Swifts FC wrote on the club's website: “His ability to hold the ball and bring others into the game plus an eye for goal made him such a success.”
