Wanstead 248-9

Wnst'd won by two runs

(ECB National Cup third round)

A THRILLING game of cricket on Sunday saw Enfield knocked out of the National Cup by Essex League champions Wanstead.

The home side needed eight to win from the last over but only managed six and lost their last three wickets.

Earlier, the visitors got off to a flying start with an opening partnership of 64 in 11 overs before Milan Patel (24) and John Chambers (39) were both caught.

Enfield spinners Harding and Clohosy began to cause Wanstead problems and further wickets went down in quick succession.

The away side were struggling at 141-7 off 32 overs before skipper Jon Hinton blasted a belligerent 85 in 88 minutes.

A last-wicket stand of 51 between Scott Maddin and Rob McKay saw Wanstead finish on 248-9 from their 45 overs.

Clohosy was the pick of the home bowlers with 3-30 from nine overs while Harding took 3-36. Alan Higgs and Andy Moulding took one wicket each and there was one run out.

In reply, Enfield lost Clohosy (4) and Allen (15) early on, but opener Tilley stuck around for an excellent 69 before being run out.

The runs continued to flow as Moulding scored 67 and Anthony Higgs added 33.

At 206-3, the hosts looked in full control, but the loss of Moulding and Higgs in successive balls swung the tie towards Wanstead.

Shrimpton (17) and Young (13) took Enfield to 238-7 going into the last over, bowled by David Richardson.

In a flurrey of desperate activity, two home batsmen were run out and another caught behind as they lost by an agonising two runs.
