Slavisa Jokanovic says Miguel Layun can perform perfectly well in central midfield but stresses Watford can't use the Mexican’s adaptability as a reason to not sign players.

The 26-year-old wing-back made his home debut in the Hornets’ 5-0 win against Charlton Athletic on Saturday but was deployed in the unfamiliar position of midfield.

Layun performed impressively in his new role and rightly earned several plaudits for his industrious performance.

Jokanovic praised the Mexican international but was quick to add Watford must sign more midfielders.

He said: “Miguel played very well. You ask me about individual players but I try and bring it back to the team. He normally plays on the wings but he knows how to play football. He played a good game.

“In central midfield today we had two wing-backs in Miguel and Ikechi (Anya). I don’t want somebody to now believe we don’t need anyone in those positions.

“We need to buy some players who can help us because there are so many games in front of us. We need more people because nothing is perfect.

“The real situation is we need players in midfield.”

When asked if Layun would now be considered for a regular midfielder role, Jokanovic added: “It is down to many things. Miguel showed us today he can play perfectly well in that position. It is not the first time I’ve used players in different positions.

“If you know how to play football it is not a problem for players to change position. Miguel played very well and he is one of our options.”
