Four hundred 400 runners took to the streets of Welwyn for the 26th annual Garden City 10.

The run is organised by the Garden City Runners and sponsored by Roche Products Ltd, Welwyn Garden City based healthcare company, who have chosen Herts Air Ambulance as this year’s nominated charity for this event.

Dean Capon, Roche’s Corporate Affairs Manager and runner said: “We are delighted to support this popular community event for the second year in a row and most importantly to make a further contribution to the overall fundraising for the Air Ambulance this year.”

The 10 mile race was started by MP for Welwyn Hatfield, Grant Schapps. A new addition to this year’s event was the children’s race, started by Herts Air Ambulance mascot Pilot Pete.

Garden City Runners Chairman Richard Meredith said: "We are very pleased with this year’s race and we hope to have raised about £2000 for the air ambulance which is truly wonderful as it is such a vital service.”

The winning male of the race was Jeff Cunningham of South London’s Herne Hill Harriers, with a time of 55 minutes 14 seconds.

The women’s section was won by Sarah Swinhoe of Heathside AC from North London, she came 16th overall, with a time of 1:01:38.

Despite no records being broken this year, the event was a huge success with near-perfect weather. Presentations took place after the race and trophies were presented to the winners by Cllr Kim Langley, Mayor of Welwyn Hatfield.
