Dear Review,

I've just read that 'Pearl', the lovely reclining sculpture that once adorned the water feature in White Lion Square, may be returned to the town centre. Sadly, I think this will be a big mistake. The sculpture was designed to be placed in water and James Butler's design was based upon Botticelli's Birth of Venus in which she appeared from a shell in the ocean. But there is no water feature now in our town centre. There were two, of course, but both had to be removed due to litter fouling them up. It would be pointless to replace Pearl anywhere other than in a watery environment and it would be ridiculous to create a new water feature which will undoubtedly befall the same fate as the previous untidy ones. She deserves better. She should be placed in one of the existing water features on the old airfield site. Simply plonking her down on a flower bed in White Lion Square will do nothing to improve the ambience. Let's show her some dignity. Perhaps James Butler has a suggestion for his sculpture?

Yours, A J Giles
