The new footbridge at Harpenden train station has been officially opened.

The mayors of St Albans and Harpenden were joined by First Capital Connect bosses for the ribbon cutting yesterday (Thursday).

The new bridge will give all passengers lift access to every platform at the station.

Judith Smart, a member of the campaign group People of Herts Want Equal Rights, was also there to watch the new facility being opened.

The town’s mayor Rosemary Farmer said: "'I am delighted that there is now lift access to all platforms.

"I know from my personal experience with an elderly parent in a wheelchair just how hugely this will be welcomed by many residents."

The footbridge was open to commuters in March and the lifts were commissioned in May.

The improvements are part of an £8 million development of the Thameslink.

First Capital Connect managing director David Statham said: "I am thrilled that our Thameslink route passengers now have lift access to every platform which is a huge help for people with disabilities as well as passengers with buggies or heavy luggage.

"This supports my personal drive as new MD of First Capital Connect to put our passengers' needs at the heart of all our business decisions and goals."

Network Rail route enhancement manager Spencer Gibbens added: "Thousands of people living and working in Harpenden rely on the railway every day.

"The new lifts will make it much easier for everyone to use the station, especially those with reduced mobility or with small children and are part our work to build a bigger, better railway."

To mark the official opening First Capital Connect gave each of the mayors £500 towards their chosen charities, which Network Rail has decided to match.
