Review of 2013: April

The Review celebrated the opening of a Jessops store in the Maltings. Following months of closures on the High Street Dragon’s Den star and multi-millionaire Peter Jones breathed some life in to the store.

While, Harpenden schoolboy Sam Olson teamed up with his father Steve to complete a 300-mile cycle ride in aid of Action Medical Research.

Meanwhile the chief executive of West Hertfordshire NHS trusts, Samantha Jones apologised for the lack of public consultation about the previously announced proposal to start charging disabled residents to park, while visiting St Albans City Hospital.

She said: “I do realise there wasn’t adequate consultation with people and for that I do apologise on behalf of the trust.“

Rats were the cause for concern later on in the month when heavily pregnant St Albans woman Laura-Jane Silverman told us she and her family had been forced to barricade themselves in one room because of a rat infestation.

Celebrity builder Tommy Walsh from BBC’s garden makeover show Ground Force, popped in to create a garden fit for Chelsea Flower Show in Harpenden.

The crew of HMS St Albans marched through the city centre for the first time ever in April. Residents lined the streets to watch the parade, which was led by commanding officer Andrew Black.
