Number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance falls in St Albans
The number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in St Albans has fallen, according to recent government figures.
For the six months running up to the end of November 2013, the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance was less than the number of vacancies advertised through Jobcentre Plus.
Overall, there was a 110 per cent increase in advertised jobs and almost a 30 per cent decrease in Jobseeker’s Allowance claimants for the year to the end of November 2013.
In November 2013, the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance was 1,059, while the number of new jobs advertised was 1,298. This compares to November 2012, when there were 1,473 claimants and 618 jobs advertised.
The percentage of the city's population claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance in the district has fallen from 1.7 per cent in November 2012 to 1.2 per cent in November 2013.
The above trend on the economy was reported to St Albans District Council’s Cabinet in December 2013 as part of a monthly performance report.
Councillor Beric Read, portfolio holder for community engagement and localism at the council, said: "Figures show that the number of new jobs advertised is now regularly exceeding the number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance. This is encouraging and shows signs that the local economy is improving.
"Nevertheless, the council will continue to support the local economy through initiatives such as the Green Triangle which promotes the district as a base for green businesses. We are also working to attract more visitors through events like the Christmas market as they spend money in our local shops, restaurants and hotels."
St Albans Jobcentre Plus is at Beauver House, in Bricket Road and can be contacted on 0845 6043719.
