A cold weather alert has been issued for south west Hertfordshire, with severe conditions expected to hit the area.

The Met Office has issued a level two warning, which they say is an important stage for social and healthcare services.

Increasingly cold air is forecast to spread from the north-west tonight and tomorrow, with frosty nights and wintry showers expected until Monday.

A yellow warning of snow and ice was also issued this morning, warning the public to be aware of the risk of some difficult driving conditions. The warning is in place from 3am on Saturday until noon.

The Met Office warning says the conditions could increase the health risks to vulnerable patients and lead to the disruption of some services.

Level two is the second highest of four Met Office warning levels for cold weather and means "alert and readiness".

The latest forecast for St Albans suggests temperatures could drop to -1C tomorrow and range from a high of 3C to -1C on Sunday.
