A temporary car park at Westminster Lodge in St Albans could be resurfaced to provide up to 70 spaces for visitors.

St Albans District Council’s cabinet will discuss resurfacing the car park at a cabinet meeting tomorrow night.

Funding is already in place to pay for the work, which should be completed in early summer.

The council is also looking at several other recommendations made by a Verulamium Park task group including installing temporary or permanent parking at the museum end of the park and improving the existing layout at both the museum and Westminster Lodge car parks to provide additional spaces.

In developing the options, the council is working with English Heritage to preserve the character of the park which is listed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

Community engagement and localism portfolio holder, Councillor Beric Read, said: “There is great demand for parking in Verulamium Park from visitors to the park, Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre, Verulamium Museum, St Albans Cathedral and the city centre.

“Supporting the visitor economy is a council priority. We are looking at options to help increase parking provision that are also sensitive to the park environment. We are also looking at creating a new walking entrance to the park along the River Ver to improve access for people on foot.”

The meeting will take place at the council’s offices athte Civic Centre in St Peter’s Street tomorrow at 7pm.
