A new suicide prevention campaign in Hertfordshire is being launched this month.

The Spot the Signs and Save a Life campaign from Hertfordshire Partnership University NHS Trust (HPFT) aims to make everyone alert to the signs of suicidal feelings and thoughts and is asking people to make a pledge to take positive action to help prevent suicide.

Positive action could be telling someone if you, yourself, are worried that you might be having suicidal thoughts and feelings or reaching out to someone who you are worried may be feeling suicidal.

Oliver Shanley, HPFT’s deputy chief executive and executive director quality and safety, said: “We know that one in five people will have suicidal thoughts at some point in their life, with 4,700 people committing suicide in England in 2013.

“However, we also know that being able to spot the signs of distress and suicidal behaviour is the first step in prevention.

“HPFT is fully committed to working with our partners and local people to help dramatically reduce the number of people taking their own lives.”

The Spot the Signs and Save a Life campaign is one of four pilots being funded by the Strategic Clinical Network East of England and the whole region has come together to pledge to improve suicide prevention.
