A St Albans optician has been named as one of Selfridges Bright Old Thing.

Robert Roope, an optician for more than 50 years and eye-wear designer, will have a selection of his sunglasses featured in one of the department store's window designs and will be for sale in the store.

Mr Roope, who owns the opticians in George Street, started designing eye-wear in 2006. His designs, known as Black Eyewear, resemble the classic frames worn by many jazz musicians of the 40s, 50s and 60s.

The 71-year-old said: "When I first started designing eye-wear I used to get a lot of people from London come up, so I set up a pop up shop in Goodge Street, which was very successful.

"The message got out that I was over 60 and so someone nominated me for Bright Old Thing.

"I was absolutely over the moon when I was then asked to show my brand on one of the world's leading stores and it really felt like I had achieved something."

Mr Roope's frames will be on display until February.
