The money from this year’s entry fees will be donated to the renaissance: St Albans fundraising campaign, who are bidding to move to the Town Hall and charity Headway Hertfordshire will also receive some of the cash.

Renaissance: St Albans is a campaign run by St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust, along with St Albans City and District Council and University of Hertfordshire Galleries to deliver a new museum and art gallery in the city.

St Albans City and District Council has already committed £2.25m to the move and money from the development of the current museum into housing will be used with the new project.

The new museum is due to open in 2017.

Mike Gray, chairman of the St Albans Museums and Galleries Trust said: "The new museum and gallery will become the centre of cultural life in the City.

"A rolling programme of innovative and engaging exhibitions will be curated for all ages to enjoy and to promote lifelong learning. History and art displays will complement each other, provoking interest, thought and debate."

Runners will have a number of options alternative races available to them on the day, including a walking half marathon, 5k race and a 1.5mile children’s fun run.

The annual event is organised by 1Life, on behalf of St Albans City and District Council.
