One of the city’s best-loved charities will mark 20 years of helping people with learning difficulties and mental health problems.

Over the past two decades Earthworks St Albans has been offering trainees work experience and training in horticultural and land-based skills at their three acre site in Hixberry Lane.

The land has since been continually transformed and moulded into a patchwork of gardens, woodland, meadow and orchards.

The charity, founded by Elisabeth Hudson, has received numerous awards and accolades since its 1995 opening, including The Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award for voluntary service by groups in the community in 2006.

They have gone from employing one member of staff to ten, with between four and ten volunteers helping a day helping around 50 adults with learning difficulties.

To celebrate the anniversary, the charity is holding an event on Saturday between 11am and 4pm.
