An appeal against a decision to refuse an application to build a private residential care home in St Albans for 81 people will be heard by The Planning Inspectorate.

Signature Senior Lifestyle applied to St Albans District Council to demolish properties between 270 and 274 London Road and build a private residential care home.

The council refused the application after becoming concerned about the height, bulk and scale of the building, its impact on the trees on the frontage, shortage of parking spaces and the strain on existing health care services in St Albans.

Residents launched a campaign to save the lime trees on the front of the site - all of which have tree preservation orders on them - because of their concern that they would not survive the construction of a large care home.

The date for the hearing has not yet been set.
