A pervert who spied on a three-year-old girl in a public toilet was caught after her mum took a picture of him and broadcast it on social media.

Malcolm Hawkins, 57, lay in wait in the women's cubicles in Verulamium Park, St Albans, and when the mother went in with her child, he put his head under the door.

The mother shouted "dirty pervert" and took a picture of Hawkins, which she distributed on social media, St Albans Crown Court heard today.

Hawkins was told about it by a neighbour and handed himself into the police.

Hawkins, of Oakmere Avenue, Potters Bar, was convicted of voyeurism for the offence, which took place on June 14, 2014. He had denied the charge, but was found guilty by the jury.

Prosecutor Will Noble said that on July 17, 1998 he sexually assaulted a woman by pushing her against a fence and touching her. She screamed and he ran away.

He received a probation order for that offence in 1999.

Piers Mostyn, defending, said Hawkins suffers from a learning disability and cannot read or write.

He lives independently and worked until a few years ago. He said he had stayed out of trouble for 16 years and had been on bail for two years for this offence without any other offences.

Recorder Patrick Fields made a 12-month community order with supervision by probation officers. He must pay a £250 fine and £1,500 costs.

The judge said he must register as a sex offender for five years.

Mr Noble said he would consult the CPS about applying for an order banning Hawkins from going to women's toilets.
