Thousands will flock to St Albans this weekend for the annual Alban Pilgrimage - a unique event which retells the remarkable story of Britain's first saint, Alban.

The vibrant procession featuring 12-ft tall carnival puppets will travel to St Albans Cathedral on Saturday, the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain and tell the remarkable story of Britain’s first saint, Alban.

Alban was executed on June 22 over 1700 years ago for giving shelter to a Christian priest who was fleeing persecution by the Romans.

Every year on the nearest Saturday to his death, a national pilgrimage is held in his honour.

Hundreds of children and adults dressed as angels, lions and Roman soldiers will feature in the event which is a part of the Alban Weekend 2016, a special weekend of festivities for the city.

The pilgrimage starts at 11am at St Peter’s Church.
