A traditional fish and chip shop has been named one of the best in Britain by sticking to its roots.

After a series of inspections and mystery shoppers, Godfrey’s in High Street, Harpenden, was shortlisted as one of the top ten in the country, on October 4.

The takeaway will now compete to win the title of the Independent Takeaway Fish and Chip Shop of the Year, in January 2017.

The shop, that has been open for four years, was shortlisted for the top ten in its first year of business, and for the last two was named in the top 60.

Having been crowned the top shop in the region, the takeaway will now put their presentation skills to the test in the final round, in London.

Owner Luke Godfrey said: "I'm very happy to be have been listed in the top ten again.

"I think what makes our fish and chips stand out is that we're a family-run business and we're traditional - we don't do burgers and kebabs; we're just very good at what we do.

"I'm feeling prepared for the final down in London. The first time we went we'd only just opened; we feel more established now."

In the final, a specialist judging panel - consisting of representatives from trade bodies and previous winners – will quiz the owners on a range of industry-related topics.

Finalists will also visit the port city of Alesund, in Norway, to witness the fishing process.

Mr Godfrey said: "I'm so excited to go. I get to go on the boat that actually catches the haddock we use in our shop. Sustainability is so important to me and being able to actually see where it comes from will be great."
