Several Marks & Spencer stores could be due for the chop, according to new figures.

The retailer looks set to close 30 of its large stores, as well as downsizing a further 45 into smaller Simply Food outlets.

Experts at the Local Data Company have compiled a list of areas it thinks are vulnerable to the fresh run of cuts, which includes two stores in St Albans.

None of the stores, some of which have existed for years named by the LDC have been officially confirmed by M&S which means employees across the country have yet to find out if their jobs are under threat.

Stores most at risk are said to include ones in towns with “too many” M&S outlets, or those based in “weakening” town centres which are already in serious decline.

LDC director Matthew Hopkinson said: “There are 35 towns and cities that have more than two M&S stores either on the high street, in a shopping centre or on the edge of town in a retail park.

“Having the right shop in the right place with the right product and a loyal customer is what will ensure survival and indeed success.”

St Albans currently has one large M&S store in St Peter’s Street as well as another two Simply Food outlets at roadside petrol stations.

Another large M&S in the area is in Barnet Road, London Colney, though the LDC figures do not specify which stores exactly may be under threat.

An unnamed M&S spokesperson said the company was “very disappointed” at the speculation the figures would generate, as it is not based on any official data from the retailer.
