More than 100 members of the St Albans Masorti Synagogue (SAMS) took part in a series of 7 projects in the area as part of Mitzvah Day.

The Jewish day of social action bring thousands of people together to give their time, not their money, to make a difference to the community around them.

This was the eleventh annual Mitzvah Day, which involved 40,000 volunteers in more than 21 countries helping hundreds of charities in different ways.

Nick Grant, founding member and Mitzvah Day coordinator of SAMS, said: "It has been a phenomenal day with 7 different projects to benefit St Albans running in parallel and more than 35 per cent of the SAMS membership getting involved."

Thanks to SAMS, the city benefited from these projects including clearing overgrowth in Fleetville cemetery where St Albans' Mayor Frances Leonard together with Muslim and Christian volunteers joined SAMS members to form an interfaith team to mark Interfaith Week.

There was also a collection of household items for refugees, an evening meal for the homeless for Centre 33, baking biscuits and cakes for children at the women's refuge, knitting woolly hats ans scarves for the homeless, planting trees in Heartwood Forest and working with Anthony Nolan Trust to recruit stem cell donors for blood cancer treatment.
