Thousands of people came to have their first taste of bratwurst and duck pancakes, see Bjorn the polar bear and listen to festive music at the St Albans Christmas market launch.

This year’s Christmas market in Vintry Gardens outside the cathedral was officially opened for business on Thursday.

With up to 60 chalets outside the cathedral, visitors were able to offer produce and enjoy Christmas cheer with a carol service every hour.

Other activities at the market include a Santa’s grotto, open Tuesdays to Fridays 1pm-6pm and Saturdays 10am-6pm, Christmas decorations workshops on Fridays and face painting on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The Christmas market will be open until Sunday, December 18.

Opening times are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday and Fridays from 11am until 6pm, Thursdays from 11am until 8pm and Saturdays and Sundays between 10am and 6pm.
