Almost £3,500 has been raised to buy toilets for schoolchildren in Uganda.

Harpenden Spotlight on Africa has launched an online fundraising campaign to buy new toilets and sinks for pupils at Musoto Christian School.

The school, which is in one of the poorest areas of Uganda, was built by the charity over the past ten years.

Currently more than 1,000 students share five toilets, without any nearby sinks. Spotlight’s aim is to raise enough money to build 25 toilets and three solar-powered handwashing units – the target is £20,000 and so far £3,354 has been raised.

Spotlight executive director Richard Okotel said: “When the girls heard that they were having a new private block of washrooms and toilets, they were so happy they burst into tears.”
