St Albans has been suggested as the best location outside London for an Amazon drive-thru grocery store.

As Amazon opens up its grocery store in Seattle the e-commerce delivery experts ParcelHero says British public could soon be parking up for groceries in St Albans and Watford.

ParcelHero says it expects to see Amazon drive-ins arrive in the UK as early as this year and St Albans is the likely area for the first drive-thru outside of London.

David Jinks, head of consumer research at ParcelHero, said: "Amazon’s Prime Now-Morrisons’ tie-up first launched in London so we expect to see a Hertfordshire location pop up as an early site for this latest retail adventure.

"Amazon has a major fulfilment centre in Hemel Hempstead. With Hemel Hempstead itself, and nearby Watford, already abundantly served by supermarkets with easy vehicle access; we would probably opt for St Albans as a sensible location for one of the first drive-thrus outside London.

"There would be considerable demand; the historic city is within easy distance of an Amazon fulfilment centre; and Amazon’s grocery distribution in the area has a successful Morrison’s tie-in."

According to Mr Jinks the UK was the first place outside the USE for testing when Amazon started its own logistics organisation and he believes this will likely happen with the Amazon drive-thru as well.

He said: "Whether you are American or British, everyone hates waiting around for grocery deliveries. Now you can cruise up and have your car loaded with your week’s order at the time you choose. And you do not even need to get out of your car."

ParcelHero also predicts drive-thru’s could arrive shortly in Birmingham, Glasgow, Manchester and Taunton.

Mr Jinks said: "Amazon is great at ‘driving’ change in retail; and the drive-thru grocery store is likely to be a winner here in the UK. Sat snuggly in your car while someone puts your pre-ordered shopping in the boot, it is the ultimate convenience store. We will race you for the courgettes."
