A woman sustained serious head injuries in what police believe was a hit and run incident last night (Thursday).
Shortly after 8.20pm, a woman was found lying in Camp Road, St Albans, but there were no vehicles at the scene when the police arrived.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Sergeant Martin Kemp from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit said: “At this moment in time the incident is being treated as a fail to stop collision.
“I am appealing for anyone with information about what happened to please get in touch with police straight away.
“Have you come across a vehicle which has suffered fresh, unexplained damage or noticed anyone acting suspiciously this evening? Any information, no matter how seemingly insignificant, could greatly assist our enquiries.”
