A HEADTEACHER has praised a trio of singers for winning a glittering contest to compose and perform a Christmas carol about St Albans.

Abbey Primary School pupils, Bibi Berrington, Rachel Smith and Rebecca Savage got the chance to perform their song in front of their friends and family at The Maltings Theatre.

Organised by The Maltings Shopping Centre, the competition asked the city's schoolchildren to come up with a festive song for St Albans.

The finalists were St Albans Young Singers with Christmas in St Albans'; Prae Wood Primary School with St Alban's Christmas'; Sandringham School with On a Hill Nearby' and The Abbey Primary School who had two carols, Ding-y Dong' and St Albans at Christmas time'.

The winners - who called themselves Sleighed' - won £500 worth of music equipment for their school in Grove Road and got their song professionally recorded onto a CD in time for Christmas.

Abbey Primary School headteacher, Libby Grundy, said: "I am very proud of them for doing so well. Their carol is so clever, with lots of street names from St Albans. I am amazed how well they did - we got two groups into the final."

'St Albans at Christmas time'

Written by Bibi Berrington, Rachel Smith and Rebecca Savage from The Abbey Primary School.

Walking down St Peter's Street, there's a chance that you will meet, Santa, Santa, Santa's coming to town.

If you live in College Street, Portland Road or Fishpool Street, Santa, Santa, Santa's coming to town.

And you know that...He's got presents, he's got toys, He's got gifts for all the girls and boys. Santa's up there in the sky, Listening to the Abbey choir. Christmas lights are turning on, Everyone's singing a happy song. Everybody's feeling fine, here in St Albans it's Christmas time.

If you live in Prospect Road, AL3 or another postcode, Santa, Santa, Santa's coming to town.

No more shopping to be done, Everyone's gone home to their mum. Santa, Santa, Santa's coming to town.

And you know that ... He's got presents, he's got toys, He's got gifts for all the girls and boys. Santa's up there in the sky, Listening to the Abbey choir. Christmas lights are turning on, Everyone's singing a happy song. Everybody's feeling fine, Here in St Albans it's Christmas time.

The traffic wardens are tucked up in bed, So Rudolph can go park his sled. Santa, Santa, Santa's coming to town. Santa's done his job at last, At Hill Street he ends his task.

Here in St Albans it's Christmas time.
