A bench has been graffitied, and a bin set on fire, at a St Albans golf club. 

Greenkeepers at London Road's Verulam Golf Club discovered the scene this morning (Friday, March 3).

The alleged incident saw lighter fluid and fireworks used to set the bin on fire, whilst the words "ALOOF", "A.C.AB" and "KILL THE PIGS" could be seen on the bench.

Hertfordshire police have been approached for comment.

The golf club's general manager, Paul Keen, told The Herts Advertiser: "Our greenkeepers, and the team generally, work exceptionally hard.

"As we see ourselves as part of the community, it's obviously disappointing for staff to see things like that happen.

"With all the hard work going in, it's obviously quite demotivating to see the hard work undone.

"Then, there's obviously a financial implication as well."

A spokesperson fro Hertfordshire police said: "Officers received a report on Friday (March 3) following an incident on Verulam Golf Club in St Albans.

"It is reported that between 5pm on Thursday (March 2) and 7am on Friday (March 3), a bin was set on fire by an unknown accelerant.

"The incident is being investigated as arson. 

"The suspect(s) then left the area in an unknown direction.

"Anyone with information is asked to please call 101, quoting crime reference 41/17977/23."

The incident follows another reported incident in December.

On that occasion, the club's halfway house sustained fire damage, motorbike tracks were seen on the course, toilets were damaged, diggers' windows were broken and graffiti was seen on the course.

Paul Keen continued, claiming: "There's been quite a few attacks on us.

"We had a halfway house - an on-course catering operation - that had been broken into a few times.

"Then on the night of Christmas Day 2022, it was completely burnt out."
