A 'delighted' Green Party has reflected on a successful local election campaign in St Albans, having retained one seat and added another in the city.

Cllr Simon Grover, of St Peters ward, has praised his now-fellow councillor Matt Fisher after his successful candidacy in Clarence.

The 2023 local elections was a record-breaking one for the party across the country, with Green councillors increasing by 200 to a total of 736.

Cllr Grover told the Herts Advertiser: "We were delighted with the election result, both with my re-election and the election of Matt Fisher as St Albans’ second Green councillor.

"Matt’s overwhelming victory in Clarence ward was truly stunning, in what had traditionally been the Lib Dems’ safest seat in the district.

"It reflects Matt’s incredible hard work in the ward, and the recognition that it’s not healthy to have all your councillors from a single party."

The Conservative Party's Parliamentary spokesperson for St Albans, Clare De Silva, claimed that the Green Party's victory in Clarence shows "cracks in Lib Dem machine".

Ms De Silva added: "I think it shows that actually the Lib Dem stranglehold isn't quite as solid as they thought."

Despite the Tory representative's thoughts on the election results, the local authority remains in the hands of the Liberal Democrats.

The leader of St Albans City & District Council, Cllr Chris White, commented: "The people have spoken, that’s always an impressive sight, and we’ll be listening to what they say throughout the next year."
