Plans for a former butcher's shop in Harpenden to become a takeaway have been approved by St Albans City & District Council.
The local authority's planning committee approved the change of use for 137 Southdown Road on Wednesday, January 24.
The address was utilised as a butchers for some years, having previously operated as 'Peter Russell Butcher' and 'Jellys Meats', before becoming Emilios restaurant.
The approved plans will now see its usage changed to become a takeaway.
The installation of a new flue to the rear of the property was also included in the plans.
A decision notice read: "The proposed change of use of ground floor from class E to sui generis (takeaway), installation of new flue to rear is considered to be acceptable in principle in this location.
"The proposal would not have a harmful impact on the safe and free flow of traffic and highway capacity, and would be acceptable in highway terms, and parking provision would be adequate.
"The council hereby permit the development proposed by you in your application."
A design and access statement included within the application adds: "The unit is too small for a restaurant but a takeaway would provide a sustainable use for the unit and keep the Southdown shopping parade vibrant and vital.
"The application has successfully demonstrated that the proposal will not result in harm by reason of detrimental impact with respect to noise, fumes, smell, general disturbance and litter.
"It is considered that this proposal will not have a detrimental impact upon the wellbeing and quality of life of the amenities of nearby properties."
More than 30 comments and objections were made to the application by residents and nearby businesses.
One objection, written by a resident of Coleswood Road, reads: "I strongly object to this application for change of use from retail to takeaway.
"For many years, the Southdown local shopping centre had a wonderful selection of retail businesses, which were much valued by the local residents.

"The proportion of these now far outnumber the remaining desirable businesses."
