HARPENDEN MP Peter Lilley is urging the Co-Operative Group to open a sub-Post Office in Somerfield's in Southdown.

It comes after the company announced the closure of Balfour Newsagents along with the sub-Post Office last week.

The shop will close on Monday 29 December leaving the area without a Post Office services.

Mp Peter Lilley is the latest to call on the company to include the services in its Somerfields branch a few doors down.“I have urged the Post Office to ensure that the sub-Post Office re-opens either under new management.

"I have also written to the Co-op, who own Somerfields and Balfours, urging them to include a sub-Post Office in their Somerfield site."

The news comes just weeks after the closure of the Batford Post Office in Station Road, putting even more pressure on the central Post Office in the town centre. Mr Lilley added: "To lose this sub-Post Office as well as the one in Station Road would mean both the areas where the people who most need these services live would be deprived of access to a sub-Post Office."

A spokeswoman for The Post Office said it is actively advertising for a business in the area to take on the service in their premises.
