CYBER-SURFERS are being asked to become “fans” of Hertfordshire Police, after the force launched its own Facebook page.

Hertfordshire Constabulary says it has joined the trendy online social networking site in a bid to engage and interact with members of the community more effectively.

The site will include photographs of wanted criminals, videos, forthcoming events, and a Herts Police blog, written by PC Ross Paybody, a former PCSO who was based at Bushey Hall School.

James Garley, web editor for the force, said: “Myself and a colleague did a lot of research about using Facebook – and we both regularly use social networking sites ourselves.

“We’ve set something up that we hope people will like and find useful but do need their feedback about how we can improve it, and what content we should include, to get more people to join.”

The new Facebook page comes after the forced launched its own YouTube channel earlier this year, and officers say it could shortly start using other sites, such as MySpace and Bebo.

Those who join will also be sent regular updates on local crime trends and crime prevention messages on how to keep safe and secure.

The site will also provide the opportunity to ask questions and discuss local issues via a discussion forum.

Chief constable of Hertfordshire Constabulary, Frank Whiteley, said: “Our Facebook page gives us a new and exciting way to interact with the community and I look forward to seeing it develop.

“With online social networking becoming ever more popular, it is important for Hertfordshire Constabulary to have a presence on sites like Facebook, as they offer another way for members of the public to communicate with us. I’d encourage people to take a look at the page and let us know what you think.”
