THE railfreight terminal will ruin a crucial part of Britain's heritage by destroying views of St Albans, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate Sandy Walkington has told the inquiry.
He said: “The strategic place of the city of St Albans in the history of this island is certainly assured.
“The irreplaceable view from the Midland main line is of national significance.
“It is not just the view from the south towards the abbey and St Albans' conservation area which will be compromised by the inappropriate bulk and massing of the proposed warehouses.
“The crucial view southwards when exiting the abbey will be changed for ever by the sight of these huge warehouses in the distance.
“Future generations will simply rub their eyes at our carelessness with history.”
