Hertfordshire Highways have got gritters on standby as plummeting temperatures and icy conditions lurk on the horizon .

The forecast for a cold snap earlier this week comes on top of heavy rainfall and is likely to lead to icy roads.

Stuart Pile, executive member for Highways and Transport, said: “It might be late coming but it had to get cold sometime. Our winter crews are ready to roll and motorists also need to be careful.

The county’s A and B roads, all major bus routes, at least one road in and out of villages, industrial areas and shopping centres are all salted by Hertfordshire Highways.

If weather is extreme, up to 1,500 tonnes of salt a day could be spread on the county’s roads.

On every salting trip, 61 gritting lorries cover nearly half of Hertfordshire's entire road network, over 1,500 miles.
