A DRIVER had a lucky escape on the M1 motorway this afternoon when the vehicle he was travelling in suddenly burst into flames.

Firefighters from Garston and Hemel Hempstead were called to the burning people carrier between junctions eight (Hemel Hempstead) and junction nine (Redbourn) at around 3.30pm.

The driver was travelling on the northbound carriageway when his engine caught alight, but managed to escape unharmed. He promptly pulled his car onto the hard shoulder where he alerted the fire brigade.

Firefighter Tony Smith, who is based at Garston Fire Station, said crews did their best to extinguish the flames, but the vehicle was completely destroyed.
