TESCO has not taken its eye off London Road as the favoured site for a supermarket, despite confirming its plans for a new express store in St Albans City Centre.

The supermarket giant has confirmed it has exchanged contracts to buy the empty Woolworths store in St Peters Street, but insists its new plans do not spare London Road from its list of potential sites for development.

Tesco spokesman Phil Brogan told the Review: "I can confirm Tesco is interested in taking the Woolworths site aNd contracts have been exchanged, but in terms of London Road the WoolwortHs site does not relate to that."

The company plans to replace its express store in St Peters Street with a large-scale Tesco Metro.
