A 38-year-old woman from Welwyn Garden City wept in court as she admitted causing the death of a cyclist by careless driving.

Kenneth Lush, 47, died instantly when he collided with a car on the A414 on May 13 last year.

Debra Kelly, of Tubbs Crofts, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and failing to report the accident at St Albans Crown Court today. She denied a charge of failing to stop.

Kelly was driving a black Ford Fiesta on the eastbound carriageway of the A414 towards Hertford when it struck Mr Lush's bike.

The Hatfield businessman was cycling from his place of work – Lush Heat Treatment – when he collided with the car.

Lush, who lived in Ware, was pronounced dead at the scene. Kelly's car collided with the central reservation and flipped over onto the westbound carriageway.

The facts of the case against Kelly were not opened by prosecutor Michael Speak at St Albans crown court.

The judge, Mr Justice Cooke, adjourned the hearing. Mrs Kelly, who sobbed in the dock, was bailed.
