A BODY-BUILDING granddad is set to become Mr Great Britain after impressing judges with his powerful physique.

At 51, Kevan Wilson of Bullens Green Lane, Colney Heath, is living proof that age is nothing but a number.

The father-of-two and grandfather to three scooped two UK Body Building Federation Fitness titles - triumphing over candidates ten years his junior - earning himself a place in the Mr Great Britain contest.

Newly-retired Kevan, who will flex his muscles in the over fifties category at the national pageant in October, insists he has no plans to sit on his laurels.

He told the Review: "I always say to people if you stop dead then you probably would stop dead. I have always been very active and the adrenaline keeps you going. I have worked since the age of nine - that was something I had to do and this is something I want to do. This is better than working for a living, it's much more fun."

Kevan, a qualified personal trainer and dietician, began pumping iron at the age of 28, following the birth of his daughter Natalie. Twenty three-years later Kevan has achieved physical prowess, weighing 18 stone in muscle.

But Kevan admits it takes hard work, a strict diet and an abundance of willpower to maintain his extraodinary bulk.

In preparation for a competition, Kevan eats a high protein diet of chicken, salmon, and rice and drinks six litres of water a day. The rigorous regime is coupled with six hours of weight training in the gym a week.

He said: "It's become a way of life. This is my life style." But he insists anyone can achieve a powerhouse build if they put their mind to it.

He said: "Anyone can do it there's no magic formula, there's no secret drugs. It's all about really hard work and a good diet."

Kevan says his key to a healthy lifestyle is his grandchildren, who keep him on his toes.

He said: "I spend as much time with my grandchildren as I can - they keep you young and healthy."

Kevan will jet off with his girlfriend to Mexico next week for a well-earned break, but it is back to business and getting in shape on his return.
