Bagpipes will soon be ringing out across Harpenden as the town's annual Harpenden Highland Gathering gets underway.

The town's now traditional Highland fling will bring thousands to Rothamsted Park today for a rich variety of Scottish-themed entertainment.

Featuring spectacular "heavy events" such as tossing the caber and putting the stone, as well as dancing and piping competitions, the festival, which last year raised more than £17,000 for charity, will support Keech Hospice and Riding For The Disabled.

One of the main attractions this year will be a re-enactment of the role of the Black Watch, the most senior highland regiment, in the Napoleonic wars, featuring authentic uniforms and muskets.

Another new feature will be Scot’s Corner with food, clothing and crafts along with kilts and members of clan associations.

Six pipe and drum bands will entertain the crowds, while the Scottish Piping Society of London members competition takes place throughout the day.

Away from the highland theme, more music will be provided by jazz and brass bands and visitors can enjoy a large classic car and motorbike display.

Full price for adults is £6 with children free, but half-price admission is available with programmes bought in advance at www.harpendenlions.com.

The Harpenden Highland Gathering in Rothamsted Park will last from 10am to 5pm.
