A TEAM of technology-savvy pupils at a Markyate school have once again scooped the top spot of a national competition.

For the third successive year a team from Beechwood Park School has triumphed in the Toyota Technology Challenge.

This year’s winning team is Hot Fuel made up of Tom Abrey, Charlie Ford, George Poole, all aged 13, and Max Holben, aged 12. They competed in the solar power car category beating off ten other schools for the winning title.

The teams were given the task of presenting their project and vehicle, which they had spent hours preparing.

Lis Rowley, Beechwood Park’s head of design technology, said: “If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again until you do.

“It’s taken three years, but it’s particularly pleasing to have also won the solar category in my last year of teaching.”

The pupils were awarded £1,000 for an action-packed adventure holiday at Montgo L’Escala, Costa Brava in Spain, in July for the team members and Lis Rowley, who the students described as “the real power behind their solar powered car”.

Last year two teams from the school reached the final, with one taking the top spot and the other coming second.
