When George Watkins from Harpenden plummeted 150 metres down a cliff face while skiing in the Swiss Alps, he thought his life had taken a turn for the worst.

But the 25-year-old has proved, over the last two years, he has the strength to get his life back on track after suffering five cracked ribs, a broken back in three places, a dislocated ankle and smashing both his heels.

He was confined to a wheelchair for more than 12 months following the life-changing accident.

In June last year, just months after recovering, George put his paces to the test by taking part in a half marathon – completing it in less than two hours.

The former St George's School pupil then took part in the gruelling Ironman triathlon in August last year.

George's determination continues as he currently prepares for the nine-day Deloitte Ride Across Britain from John O'Groats to Lands End.

Hoping to break a record by becoming the first person to complete the ride on an ElliptiGO fitness bike George said: “I've been doing quite a lot of training but it's difficult to experience anything close to what it will be like when I'm on the actually ride.

“But I do like a challenge and that's why I chose to ride the ElliptoGO, because I found out I would be the first person doing it on this.”

George, who has been sponsored by Taylor Walton, will be raising money for Herts Against Cancer and Paul's Fund, which gives cash grants to people aged 18 to 30 suffering illnesses and in need of a break.

He added: “I'm very nervous because it's a long way to go. I never thought when I had my accident I would be able to do anything like the challenges I've taken part in.

“I've been going into schools and talking to pupils about what happened to me and about my motivation.”
