A SCHOOLBOY from Harpenden, who bravely faced cancer treatment despite his fear of needles, played a starring role at a special party to salute courageous children coping with the disease.

Adam Sharp was a guest of honour at the Little Star Awards party, held at London Zoo on May 28.

The seven-year-old was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008, when he was four. After almost two years of chemotherapy the tumour had stopped growing, but it did not reduce.

Adam went through major brain surgery four times and spent many weeks in hospital.

The Wood End School pupil was one of 20 children from across the UK who came together as 'ambassadors' to represent the 220 children who received the award over the last year.

Adam had the chance to meet a host of celebrities at the event, which was hosted by Cancer Research UK and TK Maxx, including X-Factor star and I'm a Celebrity winner Stacey Solomon.

Others who attended included Dancing on Ice finalist Laura Hamilton and Cbeebies presenter Cerrie Burnell.

Adam's treatment, which ended in February last year, has left him with a visual impairment and weakness to his left side, but Adam is determined to become more independent.

Despite struggling to walk after one operation the little lad now enjoys football, hockey and running at school.

His mum Jos, who joined her brave son at the party, said: “He never complains or feels sorry for himself. Although he is terrified of needles, he took everything else in his stride and charmed doctors and nurses with his chatter.

“Everyone who meets Adam tells me is he a little star. Adam's tumour is inoperable so he has to have regular MRI scans to monitor it, which he finds interesting.

“Adam always finds the best in any situation. I am so proud of his outlook on life, his attitude and achievements.”

The Little Star Awards are given to those aged under 17 who have cancer or have been treated for the disease in the last five years.
