A blaze which destroyed Batchwood Golf and Tennis club is being treated as suspicious.

Chief Inspector Richard Hann told the Review that was the police's initial finding while investigations are ongoing.

He also stressed the fire is not being linked to the London riots.

Dismal scenes can be seen at the golf and tennis club this afternoon.

Charred shells of the bowls club members bar and tennis centre remain on the site.

District fire commander Simon Brown said the building was well alight when almost ten crews arrived at the Batchwood Drive centre.

Commander Brown said: "We expect to be here most of the day.

"We have the fire investigation dog and scenes of crime officers.

"The fire spread rapidly and we managed to save part of the gym. But the tennis club was sadly destroyed."
