On 29 October the council will be hosting a household waste collections roadshow in Welwyn Garden City. The roadshow will be held from 10am until 2pm in the Cherry Tree car park, situated between the back of the Council Offices and Waitrose.

Representatives from across the refuse and recycling services will be there:

* Serco will be on hand to demonstrate the features of the new kerbside recycling vehicles

* the council’s Client Services department will be able to answer any service related questions that residents have

* representatives from Pearce Recycling Group, the company who receives Welwyn Hatfield’s kerbside recyclables, will be explaining what happens to the borough’s recycling.

The most recent recycling results show that Welwyn Hatfield is now the second highest recycling borough in Hertfordshire and that the new waste service has delivered:

* a rise in recycling rates to over 50 per cent

* a reduction in dustbin waste sent to landfill of 38 per cent

* estimated cost savings of £300,000 per year for the Hertfordshire taxpayer from sending less waste to landfill

* in excess of £1 million recycling income over the financial year which will be ploughed back into borough services.

Councillor Colin Couch, Executive Member for Environment, said, “Residents have really embraced the new service, which is fabulous for both our local environment and the borough’s finances. Residents may still have questions they would like to ask, or like to find out more about how we collect recycling and what happens to it. I encourage everyone who would like to find out more to call in and speak to the team.”
