A man from Radlett who has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity has been selected as an Olympic torchbearer.

Michael Seres has been raising money for 3Cs, a charity that supports children living with Crohn’s disease, since he was diagnosed with the illness 30 years ago.

The 42-year-old, who writes a blog for the St Albans Review’s website, was nominated for the honour by a friend and he received a letter on Friday confirming that he had been selected.

He said: "I am very happy and I feel incredibly proud.

"It will be a fantastic experience to be a part of the Olympics.

"It is a once in a lifetime thing."

So far the father-of-three has raised more than £200,000 for the charity through a variety of fundraisers including discos and sponsored challenges.

He said: "I’ve done every sponsored activity you can imagine.

"Crohn’s is not something that many people are aware of or want to talk about."

He now hopes that his leg of the torch’s journey in Welwyn Garden City will help him raise more awareness of the charity.

When he found out he had been nominated, Mr Seres was in hospital recovering from a bowel transplant.

He said: "It was just an unbelievable boost - it just felt so special."

As part of the nomination process Mr Seres’s application had to be approved by a member of the judging panel.

Jay McGuiness, from boy band The Wanted, gave Mr Seres’s application the go-ahead, securing his place on the Olympic route.
