A WOMAN from St Albans is preparing to take part in this year's Race for Life just weeks after undergoing surgery for breast cancer.

Kathryn Hearn, who was diagnosed in April, will be joining thousands of women at Verulamium Park on Sunday, July 15, to help raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Kathryn, of Langley Crescent, will also receive support on the day from her daughter Jess, who is a pupil at St Albans Girls School.

She said: "It's a cliche, but your world does seem to fall apart when you hear the word cancer.

"It was bolt out of the blue as I didn't have a lump or any visible sign and I guess, like everyone else, I never thought it would happen to me."

After mammograms, an MRI scan and two biopsies, Kathryn had surgery at the end of May and is now starting radiotherapy treatment at Mount Vernon Hospital.

The 45-year-old added: "On the day I was diagnosed we signed up to do this year's Race for Life. Jess and I had done it last year, but this year it will have extra significance and it has been good to have something to look forward to."

Kathryn and Jess want to raise money to support the diagnosis of cancer and have so far gathered £320 in donations.

Jess said: "Not only is the race for a good cause but it's lots of fun. Lots of my friends will be taking part and there's a really friendly atmosphere."
