Redbourn held its own version of the Olympic torch relay this weekend to start the countdown to this year’s games.

More than 60 members of the community were selected to carry the flame around the village on Saturday.

Paul Sands, manager of the Recreation Centre where the relay began, said: "It was a really good day - it went really smoothly.

"The community loved it.

"Sometimes there were 20 or 30 people following the torch."

Teachers, Scout groups and volunteers were among those to be nominated to carry the flame during its three hour long trip.

The route finished at Redbourn Common where the Scouts held their annual summer fair.

Mr Sands added: "It was a fantastic way to celebrate the start of the Olympics."

The village’s celebrations will continue next weekend with a family fun day at the Recreation Centre in Dunstable Road.

Residents will have the chance to try their hands at a variety of activities, including fencing, archery and trampolining, on Saturday from 2pm.
