Residents in St Albans can look forward to the city’s first ever film festival encouraging aspiring film makers to showcase their work planned to reel out next year.

The first annual film festival will celebrate the city’s Roman heritage, becoming a popular location with film-makers, directors and actors.

The organisers behind the festival hope to bring in a collection of original films to the area, which will be screened in spots around the city.

Festival director, Leoni Kibbey, who is also a St Albans based actor, said: “I really want this festival to demonstrate how important St Albans has been and is in the UK film industry.

“It will encourage talented filmmakers in the area to make films and show them to a live audience and will contribute to the cultural consciousness of this historic city.

“Both local residents and visitors alike will get the chance to sample some exciting original films, and we may even find our new Kubrick.

“The festival will put St Albans on the filmmaking map.”

The St Albans Film Festival, that will be held in March next year will feature events, talks, workshops and a short-film competition, with thousands of pounds up for grabs.

The festival, which is already attracting interest from around the globe, with film makers from as far as Australia, Singapore, Greece and USA submitting their work, hopes to celebrate St Albans rich film-making history.

It will highlight Arthur Melbourne-Cooper, the pioneer of moving pictures who was born in the city and film director Stanley Kubrick who settled in the area, where he created some of his most famous work.

Aspiring film makers and directors can submit their short films, documentaries, music videos to www.stalbansfilmfestival.com.

Selected films will be showcased in the festival and the best film in each category will win a cash prize of £500.
