Light-heavyweight Joe Smyth could get a title shot after the St Albans boxer dished out a lesson in his comeback fight.

The former amateur star ended 13 months of injury misery with a six-round points win over experienced Mihai Macovei at the Camden Centre in Kings Cross.

Manager Mickey Helliet was delighted to see Smyth return to the ring with a convincing victory and expects the popular puncher to be battling for a belt soon.

Helliet said: “It was important for Joe to get six rounds under his belt. He's been out of the ring for a while and that’s just what he needed to get rid of the rust.

“His opponent was a bit negative, as soon as he felt Joe’s power he went into survival mode, but the six rounds will do Joe more good than a quick knock out.

“He will be boxing for titles soon – possibly in his next fight.

“I will see what titles are out there, but there’s every chance he will box for the British Masters title next.”

The title is currently vacant and Smyth put himself in line for a crack at the belt with a punch-perfect performance in Camden.

As always, Smyth took plenty of support with him to the capital for the 11th fight of his professional career and they saw him dominate from first bell to last against the hard-as-nails Romanian.

Macovei’s record shows he has lasted the distance with world-title contenders including Grzegorz Proksa and any ambition he had was soon belted out of him by Smyth’s solid jabs and right hands.

He went on to win every round on the referee's scorecard and complete a successful night for his manager.

Helliet, who won the ABA Novice championship as an amateur with St Albans ABC, had 12 boxers in action on the show and they all won.
