Saints manager Steve Castle has refused to comment on speculation his contract has been terminated.

Sources have suggested both Castle and St Albans City secretary Steve Eames were being made redundant after Verry Construction went into administration.

It was alleged the pair were sent P45 letters from the administrators which would suggest they were employed by Verry Construction rather than the holding company. But the Review was unable to get a response from Eames and Castle declined to comment on the claims.

Castle held a meeting with his squad last week but insisted he was using it to thank them for their efforts on the pitch last season. He said: "It was quite a positive meeting. They [the players] are all positive."

Commenting on the position of the club going into next season, the manager said: "It is still ongoing and it would be nice if things were resolved sooner rather than later."

Saints chairman John Gibson, who was in charge of Verry Construction, was holding meetings this week in an attempt to secure the future of the club.

The status of the Blue Square South side remains up in the air, with debts in the region of £515,000, but it is believed there could be significant developments relating to the club’s ownership by the end of this week.

It is understood former Watford defender Darren Ward is one of a group of people interested in investing in the Saints. It is not known whether this would involve a small stake or as the majority shareholder.

The latest news comes after a meeting last Thursday about the proposed supporters' trust.

Fans voted for the trust and it was also indicated the club was being taken over by Leadbitter Group. But the Oxfordshire-based construction firm also failed to respond to the Review’s questions.

There is speculation that the group have taken on Gibson as a joint director in return for winning the Oaklands College development contract.
